Affiliate Program Survey Results, Part I
Over the last several months I have informally polled about three dozen web sites that had contacted me with questions or feedback about affiliate programs. I offered my help, and in return, asked that they provide me with some information on how they are marketing affiliate programs, and what types of results they are seeing.
I would like to share with you some of this information in hopes that it gives you an idea of where you stand with your peers, and perhaps give insights into how to improve your results from affiliate programs. The results below are from 26 web sites that responded.
Question: Does your site promote mainly pay-per-sale, pay-per-lead, or pay-per-click programs?
42% Pay-per-Click Programs (11 sites)
31% Pay-per-Lead Programs (8 sites)
23% Pay-per-Sale Programs (6 sites)
4% All three equally (1 site)
Question: How many programs do you currently promote?
4% 10 or more programs (1 site)
31% 5-9 programs (8 sites)
27% 4-5 programs (7 sites)
23% 2-3 programs (6 sites)
15% Only 1 program (4 sites)
Question: How much do you make from these programs per month (U.S. Dollars)?
8% $500 or more per month (2 sites)
12% $250-499 per month (3 sites)
35% $100-249 per month (9 sites)
35% $50-99 per month (9 sites)
12% Less than $50 per month (3 sites)
Question: What method do you PRIMARILY use to promote these programs?
54% Banner Advertisements (14 sites)
23% Text Links (6 sites)
12% Personal Testimonials (3 sites)
8% Email Newsletters (2 sites)
4% Integrated into entire web site (1 site)
Although these numbers by themselves are interesting, it does not necessarily give a clear picture of what is working best. However, some simple analysis I performed shows some interesting correlations between which sites are making the highest income and the methods they are using to promote the programs they have joined.
